I have no good way of introducing this, except to use the tagline my friend used when linking to her blogspot that chronicles her time in Palestine:

Feeling depressed? Sick of violence in the middle east? Ya'll gotta check out The Cows of Beit Sahour!

Its funny, I promise.

**EDIT: By the way, for the uninitiated, "Beit Sahour" is also known as "Shepherd's Field", which is the area just outside Bethlehem where the angels reportedly appeared the shepherds as they were "tending their flock by night" (which is a total hole in the plot line, because even Beduin shepherds sleep at night, they don't do any flock tending). I know "Beit" in Arabic is "house", but I'm not sure what "Sahour" is, but its not directly translated into "Shepherd's Field" because Beit Sahour was there long before any angels appeared there. Just your Trivia Of The Day, folks.**

Leave it to zealots to get bent out of shape by something like cows. Then again, if you're going to lay seige, you really have to go all out. I'm mildly surprised that the IDP didn't take vengeance on the cows and off them. It seems in line with the ideology.

Oh, if you want to term the phrase "Military Intelligence" as an oxymoron anywhere, it is there.... I'm surprised they've gotten as far as they have, they always seem so disorganized.

The mental image of grim-faced fatigue-clad men with guns brandishing mugshot of cows as they go house to house is highly amusing.

Isn't it? Even the image of them going into the field to -take- said mugshots is quite funny.

Ha, I'm only far enough into the entry to read about them asking the cows to get off the truck... and already I'm in stitches.

But then, I grew up in the country. *reads more...*

yay! I love this story. I should add that it was told to us by Ghassan Andoni, one of the people who founded the Palestinian Center for Reprochement. Also, for the record, Sahour doesn't mean anything. We've asked around and it seems to only be a family name. Nonetheless, I'm very proud to have been named an honorary Sahouri.

Very nice story. I found some background that the IDF is able to independantly levy taxs on occupied lands. That helps to explain why it was so annoying for them.

What was Shepherd's Field called before they had shepherds?
