So my frustrations with this living broke living simply thing, and the fact that I'm well ensconced outside the musical circles I once was beginning to broach kind of came to a bit of a head last night.

I received a postcard in the mail from the CSO about an all-Brahms concert next month. With Mehta conducting, and Barenboim on the piano. I absolutely love Brahms, despite the fact that I mildly disapprove of his viola sonatas. Brahms, to me, is like a down comforter- warm, comfortable, homey, thick and squishy, and appropriate for many seasons.

So I really wanna go. But the cheapest seats- in the nosebleed gallery- start at $29, and where I want to sit- the lower balcony- starts at $69.

Whatever happened to trying to make the arts accesible to all? But that's a different story...

Anyway. I'm starting to think I could easily blow several months worth of entertainment budget on a ticket to this.

Ya can't win 'em all.

Don't get me started. I would really love to go see Wicked, and I seriously can't justify the cost either.

Many, many people have said Wicked is just so good! Same here, though - other $$ priorities...

that looks really interesting, but I won't be in town to enjoy it. I think it's worth the money to spend on GOOD entertainment. I haven't been to the Lyric or the CSO in forever...

Does HotTix still do $10 tickets if you pick them up an hour before the show begins? Or am I once again showing my age?

I know absolutely nothing about that. Did they used to, for the CSO? I suppose its worth checking into, but I'm pretty certain this performance would sell out.

Don't even get me started! The number ONE biggest problem in the arts is it's accesibilty to artists. BOO! How can they charge $69 a ticket?

I have been in a lot of shows that I could not afford to buy tickets to with what they were paying me. Blah.

When I was in youth symphony in HS, we -had- to sell tickets to our concerts, ten apiece. If you didn't sell them you had to buy ten anyway. I was on scholarship, so it was kind of silly to make me buy tickets to my own concert. Plus, no matter how good the youth symphony is, its hard to get people to pay $25 a ticket to go see them. We ended up buying at least five tickets a concert at the cheapest price and giving them away to friends at church or something.

Bah.

$29 doesn't seem like that much, especially when some mass-produced movie theatre ticket is $10.

You can try to find a friendly person who supports Public Radio... NPR was advertising that you could get 2 for 1 tickets to the CSO with their Chicago Public Radio Membership card.
