[livejournal.com profile] kalmn, in her post about the ELCA's recent decision to allow (non-celibate, AKA partnered) LGB (T isn't even in the discussion lexicon yet) ordination, she describes the three main branches of the Lutheran church as such:

"for those of you not familiar with the lutheran church in its many weirdo varieties, the elca is the "mainstream" lutheran church. (there are also the missouri synod and the wisconsin synod, aka six miles to right of attila the hun and six miles farther right than that. as well as many smaller sects.)"

which amuses me to great ends.

Yeeeeah my great aunt's church is BFF with Atilla the Hun or something. You don't even want to know what they say about LGB people, and god knows what they say about T.

I'm getting to like the Lutherans. The Church of Sweden (which is Lutheran, and in communion with the worldwide Anglican Communion) recently elected as Bishop of Stockholm a Lesbian woman in a registered homosexual partnership.

T isn't even in the discussion lexicon yet

For churches that have women ministers/priests, i.e. almost all the mainstream non-RC non-Orthodox ones, would there actually be any obstacle (in theory at least) to the ordination of a transgendered/transexual person? Hmm, the Church of England at least does ordain transsexuals.

I don't know the Lutheran church well but in the United Methodist church there was recently a pastor who transitioned while in the parish. I can't remember the gender of the person but their congregation was very supportive. Naysayers, of course, brought the issue before the 08 general conference and tried to get a resolution in the Discipline banning trans folks from ordination. It failed (amazingly, given our record on LGB issues!) largely on the grounds that it would create a whole "new category of discrimination." Funny how they don't understand it's the same with LGB, no?

Anyway, the only obstacle I can see is in the case of a trans person who is already partnered, and then after transition is in a same-sex partnership. But it's still the sexual orientation and not the transgender status which would be an obstacle.

I think the one that my daughter goes to now and then (hasn't in a while) was Missouri synod. I was very disappointed.

Yeah, when I get into discussions about Lutherans I always have to distinguish between the crazies and the "mainstream" :) and hurray for the ELCA!
