The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison.
It is a head-on, blunt, heartbreaking story of a young black girl who desperately wants blue eyes, because blue eyes mean you are "good". As the Wikipedia article states, it deals with racism, incest, and child molestation, and is unapologetic about doing so. Even though it is a very difficult thing to read, I think it is is essential for everybody- especially white folks- to read it at least once. Despite its hard subject matter, though, it contains Toni Morrison's usual gorgeous writing style, and is so worth the read.
