So preparations for A Very 'Nidge Thanksgiving, Part III are well underway. Tonight the following things are happening in the kitchen:

- Benjamin made two kinds of mashed potatoes- one pesto, one regular
- I have Apple Betty currently baking in the oven
- There are two enormous trays of split squash brushed with olive oil waiting for their turn in the oven, to be used tomorrow in this amazing soup
- I need to make the stuffing, sans oysters- or nuts or fruit or any other type of silliness- that will go in the turkey, as the turkey will go in the oven before I get up tomorrow (a more intelligent person would have put water on to boil before sitting down at the computer- I'll be right back)

Moving on:

- Sunday will be making cornbread

Kate and Larry left yesterday morning to go to North Carolina to see her mom. This leaves Sunday, Benjamin, Joy, and me. Additionally, we are having various friends and relatives come by, including Habibi and his parents, to add up to almost twenty people total. Sunday already roasted one turkey- getting two medium-small turkeys instead of one huge one, on the theory that they will stay juicier- last night, and will put the second one in early in the morning. Various other foods, including a pork roast, candied sweet potatoes, cranberry nut bread, salad, and vegetables will make their way here with guests. All in all, it should be a chaotic but fun day. The evening, I hope, will be rounded out with some Eddie Izzard, as I really want to introduce my mother to him.

On a related note, I find it interesting that someone like Neil Gaiman can blog about making cranberry jelly, and somehow it is just as fascinating to read as anything else he has written.

Wow. I'm tired. I think I am going to let Sunday deal with baking the squash, and go to bed.

That soup does sound fabulous. As does everything else, particularly the stuff I saw being prepared.

Also, have you ever heard Neil Gaiman speak? He's fascinating in person, too. Seriously, he can talk about cheese and it's interesting.

Oh, the apple thing looked and smelled heavenly when I took it out of the oven!

Hey, thank you so much for dropping by, even though all you did was watch us prepare our stuff.

I have never heard him speak, but I'd really love to. Sometime I need to sit down and go through all of the videos he has up on his website of his Graveyard Book tour.

Oh, also- I am thinking about a way to make that soup vegan. Not for today, but just for sometime. I wonder if I used silken tofu and some soy milk instead of the heavy cream, if that would work. Hm.

Hey, hanging out was great. I'm always a fan of low-key hanging out, whether or not it involves watching people prepare food. heh.

Yeah, definitely check out Gaiman's web content. You might also want to see if the library has any audiobooks of his-- I definitely recommend "Warning: Contains Language".

And that definitely sounds like a possible way to veganize the soup, but I'm not sure if it's the awesomest way. I am not a vegan (I love me some dairy products). But I know an excellent vegan cook, if you don't have a consultant for veganizing the soup.

Neil is fantastic to listen to live. I was at the DG reading in October, as well as his last visit to the Chicago area.

I have ALWAYS wanted to try to make a Turducken. But honestly, one wrapped in bacon sounds so vile to me!

You know, I thought that at first, too, but after seeing the last picture on that blog with the bacon crisply resting atop of everything else...I shamefully admit that I'd like to eat it.

Also, I just think it'd be beyond amusing to present something so nonsensically meaty to the Nidge for b=dinner.
