So I had another doctor's appointment this afternoon, regarding my wrist. Because St. Joseph's doesn't have an orthopedic specialist on staff, they sent me to what is apparently the next best thing- a rheumatologist.

After some serious poking and prodding and twisting and bending and pushing ("Does it hurt HERE?" AuggghhhH!!!!" "So that's a yes?"), dude finally came to the conclusion that he's pretty certain that there are two little bones in the back of my hand that are indeed broken. He says that this break can certainly affect where else I still have pain and swelling, and if there's a break, it probably won't show up on x-rays for another month or so. Also, there isn't really anything else we can do for it that we aren't doing now- wear the brace if it helps, if it hurts to do something, don't do it, take pain medication if it hurts. Oh yeah, and wait. So I have another appointment next month, whereupon we will take more x-rays and see what they say, and assess pain and swelling, if there is still any.

This is a frustrating turn of events, for sure, but even though I hate that I have something wrong with my left hand (a string player's nightmare), there are good things overbalancing it:

1) My back is way better. If I had never fallen and ended up in the ER, we never would have discovered the difference muscle relaxants make for my back.

2) I have qualified for 100% charity care for the next six months under the entire St. Joseph's network. This means I don't have to fear being sent to specialists or having tests done because I can't afford them. I didn't even have the slightest bit of co-pay today. I don't have the words for how much of a relief this is.

So I'm just going to go about my business, with the wrist brace, if needed, and wait and see what happens a month from now. Hopefully there won't be anything else wrong with it. Hopefully, nothing else will go wrong!

wow! so, the broken bones is a bummer, but number one is great...muscle relaxants can be soooo good!!! and number 2 is amazing, congratulations! What a relief that must be, and my recommendation is, make the most of it!

hmmm, actually, I wonder if one night's sleep with muscle relaxers might ease up my back a bit. hmmm.

It's worth trying!

I'll second what [livejournal.com profile] sadie_sabot said. Yay! And hee ("Is that a yes?"!).

And while being a string player made me more ambidextrous than most right-handed people, it doesn't mean that I can write with my left hand. Good thing I've only ever been strictly amateur with that, eh?
