Jan. 24th, 2008 11:45 pmSo I got a haircut.
No, let me rephrase.
I got a HAIRCUT.
For those of you who don't know me IRL, or haven't seen me in a very long time, for eons I sported the long, straight hippie-type 'do. In fact, except for trims here and there (okay, one or two of those I had to cut of 4 or 5 inches at a time of split ends), I haven't appreciably cut my hair in almost ten years.
Two years ago, when I spent two months in a place where I was lucky to be able to wash my hair once a week, I seriously contemplated cutting it all off. But I realized that when the two months were up, I'd want my hair back. So I made do with braiding and bandanas, et al.
When I got sick in 2006, and in the resulting 22 months (and counting- but who's bitter?), I probably should have cut my hair, but with all the rest of the upheaval, it would have been too much change.
But in the last few months I have gotten tired of dealing with it. The times it was clean and brushed and shiny were outweighed by the hassle it was to wash it every day too keep it such, and the hassle of trying to find non-boring and non-repetitive yet convenient styles to keep it in.
Yes, I'm aware I just ended that sentence with a preposition. Moving on.
So last Friday, I was thinking about it yet again. And leafing through a magazine, I came upon a picture of a haircut, and thought "hey, that would look really good on me!" After some consultation with
sleepykins, I called up
divalibby76, who has been trying to get me to cut my hair for years, and got an appointment that night with her stylist.
We cut off just about two feet of hair. I didn't know I had two feet of hair! Of that, I have seventeen inches worth of braid that I will be mailing to Locks of Love as soon as I get off my ass to do so.
So here's some pictures.
First, go compare it with pictures here, from August of 2005. You can't see exactly how long it is, but you can get the general idea.
Okay, now you can look under the cut. Warning, it is extreme camwhoreage, there are about ten pictures under there.
The best overall shot of the style

Would've been a super cute picture if the camera had been a little farther to the right...

Innocent

Stoned!

You can totally see how red my hair still is- henna is powerful stuff!

Kilroy Was Here

Actually, I had hoped it would be an inch or two longer, but the nice thing about hair is that it grows. So far I'm not missing it at all, I just love it like crazy. I'm sure I will miss it at some point, but right now I'm just reveling in having low-maintenence hair.
Although this means I need to hippe-up my clothing again, so I don't lose all my Hippie Cred for cutting off the Quintessential Hippie Hair.

Date: 2008-01-25 05:17 pm (UTC)And good luck with keeping your hippie cred. I know when I chopped off my ultra-long-I'm-in-grad-school-and-too-poor-to-think-about-a-haircut, which was also a good two feet of hair (also donated to locks of love, yay!) all of my hippy image went away. I've even been introduced as "Mary, the used to be hippie" and all that changed was my hair. I still wear the same clothes, have the same freaky liberal beliefs, just not the crazy mane.
