They make tea kettles that whistle.

Why can't they make saucepans that whistle?

Excellent question.

You didn't have a cooking disaster, did you?

There was about 1/8th of an inch of water between me and a ruined saucepan.

Trying to up your standing? ;-)

My grandmother always had a whistling kettle, it was cool. My electric kettle has an actual bell somewhere inside it that dings when it shuts off.

You couldn't make a whistling saucepan in the same principle because for one thing you don't always want what's in your saucepan to be boiling but I bet there's some way to embed electrodes on the inside floor of the saucepan and make it shriek if the resistance gets too high (ie. exposed to air).

I don't think I know how to cook anything that doesn't want boiling....

Clearly what's really needed is some sort of cooking AI. Making it cook for you would be hard, but I wonder if a computer could be taught to recognize via a camera, smoke detectors, etc. if undesirable conditions occurred (e.g. boiling over, burning, imminent saucepan destruction).

I would, but I'm too tired from installing a computer lab. No, I'm not kidding. I'll write about it at some point after finals...

my mom has this small ceramic disc with a notch on one side of its rim and "212" in red numerals. she tosses it into the water-for-spaghetti pot. when the water is boiling "hard" enough, the bubbles lift the ceramic disc till the notch lets the bubbles escape from one end and it falls back to the bottom. tap taptap TAPTAPTAPTAP...

mom doesn't remember where she got it, since it was 25 or 30 years ago. i've been looking for several years now but haven't found one, nor does anyone in the stores (and i'm at charleston cooks and w-s, not just LnT) seem to recognize it when i describe it.

I bought one... Probably 2000-2001. But of course the chain is out of business!

what chain was it? might help me in a google search. right now all i'm coming up with is "making water safe" and water filtration systems and the like.

I bought it as part of a wedding gift from Kitchens Etc, a kitchen store chain (kind of like Lechter's) in New England. All of the stores I knew of are gone.

well there are pressure cookers that can whistle...

Are they supposed to do that?

yes, pressure cookers are supposed to whistle, but once they do, you should turn off the heat.

I accidentally forgot to turn the stove burner off today and left the frying pan on for like 6 hours.

A month ago I was heating oil for... something, I don't remember what, and I went to the bathroom, came back after less than 2 minutes, and there was a raging inferno in the pan.

A couple of weeks ago I was boiling a bit of water and vinegar and I forgot about it until it had all evaporated and smoke was coming from the saucepan. The whole house smelled like burnt vinegar for hours... I had to open the windows to air it out and it was like 20 degrees outside.

I = kitchen disaster. *LOL*

OK so i found this, which is what mom has (you can't see that there's a notch on one side of the rim so the bubbles all go the one way to tap tap tap, but trust me it's there)...now to find someone who still sells it...

That would be really awesome! I'd love to get my hands on one for our kitchen. I'm hardly the only one here who has forgotten a pan of water set to boil.

Because of your link, I found the magic phrase for google-fu "pot watchers". Several links on the first page found the right items for $2.99.

My friends cooked their turkey with a thermometer that had a remote. It set off a little alarm on the remote when the turkey reached the right temperature. I'm sure you could use it for a saucepan too.

Oh, I should check that out! Thanks! This is hardly the first time I've done this. Last winter i went through a phase where I ruined quite a bit of ramen.
