Last night I had the vague idea that I'd shower before I went to bed. Turns out I was too lazy/tired/apathetic/in pain to do so. I then figured I'd do it when I got up today.

This afternoon I went to fill the bathtub with water, and threw in one of the good-smelling Lush bath bombs that Libby gave me. When it was about 1/3rd full, I stuck a toe in to test the temperature.

It was ice cold.

I immediately checked to see if I'd turned the cold tap on too high. I hadn't.

So I turned the water off and went of in search of Larry, who was the only other person home at the time. I reported it to him. He pointed out that he had just run the dishwasher and the washing machine (yes, we're blessed with both in this house, huzzah!), but he'd check the hot water heater.

Turns out the storm had blown out the pilot light. Not only that, but due to such high winds, Larry couldn't even keep a match lit long enough to get it to the pilot light.

So we're out of hot water, and I desperately need a shower. In an effort to at least have the bath I wanted earlier, I'm boiling water and pouring it into the tub, where I had kept the water from earlier- hey, I'm not going to waste Lush products. But so far, two kettles of boiling water later, and I don't detect much change in the water temperature. I'm boiling both of our kettles at the same time, and if the next round doesn't do anything, I'm going to just fuck it all and stay dirty for another day. I've roughed it through much worse, but that doesn't mean I like to do it.

Bleurgh.

I feel your hot-water-lacking woe. :(

Oh yuck. I've been there. Word of advice: Pots are better than kettles. You can put more water in a pot.

That occurred to me -after- the fact, of course.... I also didn't think it would take quite that much boiling water to make a cold tub wash-in-able temperature. I suck at physics. Or chemistry. Or whatever science that is.

Where is your water heater that the wind was blowing out the match so that it could not be relighted? My water heater is on my lower level. I've never heard of wind blowing out the pilot light of a water heater. I truly don't understand

It must be in the basement somewhere- could be I'm using wrong terminology and its not the water heater exactly, but something else that involves the gas in general? I don't know. I know that Larry has checked it several times, and somewhere there is an exposure to wind or a draft that keeps blowing out flame- this time he said he got it lit, but it blew out right away.

I hope Larry reports this to the gas company. You could die of the fumes in the middle of the night. Something is wrong. My water heater and furnace have safety sensors which will cut the gas supply so that there can be no fumes if something malfunctions. For your safety, please mention this to Larry. The wind should not keep blowing that pilot light out.

I will, thanks.

Ugh. I sympathize. The hot water just shuts off for no reason here (i.e. in my dorm building) sometimes, and 112 college students take cold showers or go to class dirty.

I think you could calculate how much water you need.

A full bathtub contains about 100 gal. So estimate how much water is in the tub and the temperature of the water. Water boils at 212 F. So, you need to add enough water to make the average temperature something pleasant.
