Mar. 16th, 2003 11:03 pmHad a far busier weekend than I really wanted, but on the up side, it was highly successful. This afternoon we were supposed to take the youth group ice skating downtown, but seeing as it was 60 degrees, we figured we'd be doing more along the lines of slush skating. Instead, we went for pizza at Pizza Hut and went roller skating. Remember that? On four wheels, two on each side? They had a really good time together, and I have to admit I had a really good time watching them. They're so damned cute.
Yesterday I helped staff a Teach-in and Speak-Out with the Dupage Peace coalition group thingy. We didn't have as many people as we'd hoped- it wasn't publicized very well- but it was VERY successful. We're lucky that we have people who are highly informed and extremely articulate. They really know what they're talking about and the get it across well. Tonight I went to a candelight vigil downtown Chicago. There were vigils in over 5500 cities worldwide, all starting at 7 p.m. local time. There were probably 200 people where I was, and it was invigorating to know we were joined by so many thousands of others.
My activities this weekend only strengthened my indignance at the war issue, and the general injustice happening all over the world. So, as I usually do when at a loss for words, I am going to use someone else's words.
I love Bono. I am going to marry Bono.
I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes
And make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...
Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...tonight...
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On...
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday...
