Ooooooooooh fuck.

Here goes my relatively normal sleep schedule again. And this time I can't blame it on The Sims. I have to blame it on Harry Potter. And the four-hour nap I took this evening. And by "nap", I mean "when I passed out so completely that when I woke up the laptop I lent to a housemate earlier was sitting on top of me."

There was a wedding reception under my bedroom window today. And by "today" I mean "Saturday". Part and parcel of practically living in a church, eh. The house was supposedly invited to the music/dancing part of the reception (as opposed to the schmoozing/eating part), but none of us went.

I'm extremely tickled by my new (relatively, anyway) default icon.

Our KinderEgg toy collection is growing. Yay! But when I googled them, the US site looked like this.

Stupid Americans. Stupid fucking Americans.

Gar.

This is not my default icon. But maybe it should be.

Well, you can bring some, but I have a very reliable supplier (http://www.polyfrog.livejournal.com) right here in Chicago ;-) But our whole house is getting addicted to the toys, although I think I'm the only one who actually eats the chocolate.

first of all, I figured out who the supplier was, even though the link didnt work.

secondly, according to your anonymous supplier, the European toys are better. and I personally think that all european chocolate is better than anything you can get in north america. It's a conspiracy, I say!!!

so, I repeat, shall I go on an egg hunt?

I think that European chocolate (that is, the everyday kind you buy in markets) is probably better if only because in some places (I've heard) they have laws as to how much cocoa they have to put in chocolate. Additionally, the use of sugar instead of corn syrup in commercial foods is different. One thing I love about the Europeans is that they have hundreds of years of traditionally food and beverage manufacturing that has been passed down through the generations. My husband and I both believe this makes for some better products all around.

And as for Amy, I say bring her some eggs. I mean, who is going to say no to MORE CHOCOLATE.

Not I.

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!

And, um, any other European chocolate would be welcome as well.

That's one of the things I found interesting about the book Devil in the White City. The Chicago World's Fair (Columbian Exhibition) was right at the time before the trade unions started gaining momentum and muckraking gave birth to the regulatory agencies that we all know and love. In the book, the author gives a vivid acct at what it took to make a huge fair in the up-and-coming city of Chicago. This included the Ferris Wheel, which had NEVER BEEN BUILT before and NEVER BEEN TESTED. Safety? What's that? Accounts say just in the first spinning of the wheel, there was a shower of nuts and bolts that were loosely lodged in the wheel that had a multi-hundred human capacity. Meanwhile, the other part of the story in the book talks about doctors and architects who didn't have to pass any credentialing exams, let alone go through rigorous schooling to practice their craft.

Credentialling (and additionally, knowing what MIGHT cause disease and death)doesn't cure all our ills. It statistically changes the number of survivors to non-survivors, but doesn't eradicate.

And in the end, we can harp on this a lot, but isn't near-choking or actually choking our little human way of saying, STOP DOING THAT or PAY ATTENTION.

Pain is a great teacher. With our overly-litigious society, however, I fear most will never learn.

pardon YOUR language?

I can't find it now, but I heard on the radio the other day that somewhere in the world (I think in Europe) some kind of artistic exhibit was being closed because of one, single, solitary complaint. That complaint, of course, being from an American.

The Canadian toys are not as good as the European ones anyway.
I wish I could find more of the off-brand KinderEgg knockoffs I was seeing for a while. They had toys that were...better in design and poorer in manufacturing. If [livejournal.com profile] dl76 were to find some of those...

No need to go hunting, but if you find kinderegg-like things that are not Kindereggs, by all means buy some! The ones I was getting for a while were white with a red and a green end and I think were called "Helo!" or maybe "Hello!" Most of the rest of the packaging was in Polish and other Eastern European languages.

It seems like one you are feeling better you might be able to parley the weddings into a moneymaking opportunity.

Oh, I've already given my card to the music director at the church.

Actually, its two churches. There is a regular all-American, English-speaking congregation that owns the building and meets in the morning. There is also an Arabic-speaking congregation that has long been a part of the building and meets in the afternoon.

Actually, its three, because my housemate's ecumenical church-plant meets there on Sunday evenings.

But anyway, the wedding yesterday was between someone from the English-speaking congregation and someone from the Arabic congregation. So there was some Arabic music at the reception, one of my housemates reports that hookahs were being smoked.

I'm actually looking to someday having a relationship with the Arabic congregation. They sometimes run Arabic classes, although I'm not sure what kind of Arabic they're teaching. The pastor is Palestinian, but the congregation comes from all over.
