Okay, update:

Got to the ER. Basically, they gave me something to control the nausea, then when that was somewhat under control , two tablets of the painkiller I've been on for months anyway. Then sent me home with a prescription for enough painkillers to last a couple days until the other prescription comes through.

I kinda felt sorta dismissed during my entire visit. And all of this was after the triage nurse basically accused me of selling off my pills or taking too many at a time and that's why I came up short. My good buddy Lori, who is studying nursing at Rush, and was kind enough to wake out of a groggy sleep to give me phone advice at 7:30 this morning, was pretty certain they'd give me something for the withdrawl symptoms (presumably something more than something that controls the nausea), treat me for dehydration, and hook me up with something powerful to control the pain. All of that, obviously, was not necessary.

I am busy self-hydrating with PowerAde (I don't like Gatorade), although for future notice, I will, at [livejournal.com profile] iniswitryn's advice use Pedialyte, for the whole electrolyte issue. Since its been over an hour since I had those two pain tablets and my pain level is still around 7 or 8, I am taking two more. I'm still not certain that the stomach/intestinal issues are solved, but I haven't tossed the pills back up, and the PowerAde seems to be settling decently. I got an ice cream while we were waiting at Walgreens, because my stomach was feeling okay enough for that, and frankly- I thought I deserved it, even though I didn't get a shot or anything traumatic like that.

Although this time I brought my teddy bear with me, just to be prepared. I left him in the car and figured I'd send Erik out for him just in case there was a situation that warranted it, like getting admitted, or some sort of traumatic treatment that would need the assistance of my good buddy, Theodore E.

Now, I am going to attempt to get some sleep, since I haven't slept much in the last couple days, party due to lots of pain, partly due to withdrawl, I'm sure. And after that much Norco in my system plus the sleeping pill I'm about to take, I should surface around 7 or 8 tonight. Although after downing a quart of energy drink, I'm sure I'll have to pee every twenty minutes.

To do list:

- Call someone for a ride to the chiropractor's tomorrow
- Call counselor about referral to chronic pain counselor

This is just a random thought, but sometimes dehydration can cause nausea. Additionally, I'm a big fan of VitaminWater and SmartWater. Both of those usually have electrolytes, if not other vitamins. Also, EmergenC's can make water taste pallatable, and there are some other similar mixes that come in packets that are like little packets of Gatorade. Bananas are good for potassium, incidentally.

There was vitamin water there, but only in the grape flavor, and I hate grape-flavored stuff. So we settled for the powerade. but drinking the stuff and reading the label, turns out that stuff does have electrolytes.

ProPel which is made by either Gatorade or Powerade is kind of like VitaminWater too.

FWIW, Noel has had to do the pedialite thing, and she says the stuff tastes NASTY.

oh yeah ... it's ewww. it's like very stale water with the barest hints of flavors. if you can imagine, take some ice that's been in the freezer for awhile soaking up the other frozen flavors - then melt it and drink it.

i strongly suggest using it as cold as possible. and i wouldn't suggest it at all, except it really does work, and it stays down when nothing else will.

i dislike gatorade too, but in their "gatorade ice" line they have a lime that is the least like gatorade, and downright yummy on hot days when consumed very cold from the fridge.

I like the Light Purple flavor in the Ice line myself. I don't think it's actually a flavor (like grape), but it's tastey. I think what I like about the Ice line is that it's not really flavored like a specific artificial flavor... it's just citric acid, water, corn syrup and electrolytes with food coloring.

um, you're thinking of their Frost line...the Ice line is all clear no food coloring, and no color names just flavors.
my sweetie likes the light purple too, tho. :)

jah.

if you like how much "lighter" the Frost is (from normal gatorade) i'm betting you will love Ice. :)

you are you, and you are wonderful, and you are not far away when there is the internet. I want to kiss lori and smack her at the same time. she was a huge help, but she isn't very good at the whole empathy bit yet. but i'm so glad she wants to help, and not just because she feels obligated or something. Thanks for urging me to call her.

I have yet to check your new blog. Anything interesting happening there?

I miss you, but I'm excited for you to do this program. I promise I will stay alive till you get back :-)

I love you!

If your body weren't so fucked up, you could be here with me!! The orchestra is doing Bruchner 3. The brass was practicing yesterday in the basement of the'heim and the whole building was vibrating!

Lori loves you and yes, she wants to help. She wants to give more than people are ready to receive sometimes. I know she's done that to me a couple times. It can be overwhelming, and I've told her that. She tries to back off. Just be patient with her.

Italy won the world cup last night! I was drinking guinness in an Irish bar in Austria watching the world cup broadcast from Berlin, and I was texting with KTE (cause Italy was playing France, and she couldn't get it on TV there) and I texted with Mark a little. I was flirting with a *young* austrian man, but that's all. It was nice to escape the sopranos for a couple hours. I have a feeling I'm going to want to escape the sopranos a lot this summer.

I've already been off work since Wed. I have to go today... see how I do. The codeine laced cough syrup isn't agreeing with me however. At least not with citrus.

Codeine in system + citrus = 1 unhappy me.

I hope things get back to tolerable soon, I miss you.

There certainly is.

For what, I'm baffled. But it seems that, after all these years, there -is- always aqua velva.

Since you responed I will pass on some unwanted advice. There is a sports drink whose name escapes me that is sold at health food stores and is an electolite drink with out the unnessesary added phosphoric acid. It is not expensive in large health food coops.

Also, the reason the Coke helped your stomach is that bombarding the brain with glucose eases stomach distress. When I was a kid (and stegasaurus was sevrved at McDonalds) we drank Coke syrup. It is like pure Coke with out the Carbonated water. Perhaps it can still be found, but if not Emterol which is prescribed for pregnant women is the commercial option. Sweet syrupy glucose. A bit nasty but it DOES work.

If all else fails there is always aqua velva.

Actually, i learned in high school from our local, friendly pharmacist at our local, friendly, family-owned drugstore, that coca-cola syrup does settle stomachs. I personally don't enjoy the taste of coca-cola, but since it was around at the time I knew it would help a little. I've tried emetrol in the past, but I've found that if I have already passed a certain level of nausea, especially if I've already been throwing up for some time, it actually -makes- me barf instead of the other way around. It certainly tastes NASTY.

And if you can remember the name of that sports drink, I will look for it. Unless what you're thinking of is Vitamin Water?

No I am not speaking of vitamin water. I am speaking of the health food store equivalant of Gatorade/Poweraide. I reclcled all my bottles recently, so I can't find an empty tonight. I can picture the bottle. It is glass and has a hexogonizal rise at the top....I'll find out.

And if you want to save money and control the taste some, make your own:

It is actually not bad.

Emetrol! That's what I was trying to remember last night.

Sorry to hear about the grief given you by the nurse; there are people who do that, as we all know from watching ER, right?

Brilliant idea to see someone who deals in chronic pain.

yup. coca-cola was originally sold for medicinal purposes. back in the combination soda fountain/drug store days.

dr. pepper was a real doctor, who added sugar (and later other flavorings) to the cola fizz to make it more palatable.
