So my birthday is one week from today.

I will be 30.

That's right, the big 3-0.

Two years ago, I had the best birthday ever. No, really. EVER.

Last year, I was really sick on my birthday, and was several days later diagnosed with Whooping Cough, which sent my sister and six of my closest friends scurrying to their doctors for antibiotics because they ate the cake after I blew the candles out.

This year.... well, this year is.... this. There is a good possibility I'll have to go to the doctor on my birthday.

But my birthday seems sort of like... meh... to me this year. I haven't felt a real holiday sensation for any big occasion on the last five months. I was in Tuwani for Thanksgiving, and while we made a great meal that definitely approxomated your average American Thanksgiving meal, it wasn't the same. And then, two days later our four friends disappeared in Iraq. Christmas- just a month later- was brushed off, mostly. Valentine's Day? Meh- which is of no commentary to the person with whom I spent it. Easter? Well, that was a month after Tom was killed, although Norman, Jim and Harmeet were all safe at home by then. It was also about three weeks after I got sick. I tried to celebrate, but it wasn't holday-feeling.

So in one week I turn thirty. A monumental birthday, a milestone even, perhaps. And to be honest, I don't really much care. Should I be worried?

no

Given the amount of beer involved, I'm surprised you could remember your name.

You know, in the grand scheme of things, 30 is sort of a turning point toward adult responsibility, or was when I was that age. Not that you aren't responsible now! But from the perspective of an almost official Old Person, it's just another interesting milestone in what will be a longer series of these things. Life is an adventure! Enjoy it! (Well, get well first!)

I've been meaning to write you - I'm sorry I live so far away; I'd totally help! But you have several good folks there ready to help you out. Sending healing thoughts your way... ; )

No, 30 is where you officially get to stop caring and go around looking like a bag lady because Society no longer considers you Desirable anyway... Or was that just me? :)

Congratulations on your milestone, but after all age is just a number. Sounds like you got more important things to worry about than whether you "should" be caring more about a birthday. I hope that at least your RL friends are able to do nice stuff for you, and your Internet friends keep up the kind thoughts and good words. Happy Birthday.

Kudos to you for being the only person who seems to begin to understand the point of this post :-)

Even if I were looking forward to celebrating a birthday, I'm not particularly worried about turning 30. I'm worried that I don't care about celebrating.

I'll admit I made a bit of hoopla about my 30th, but it was more because I'd thought of a schtick for the party ("Come celebrate Mikey's last day of trustworthiness!") than because it was #30. Same for my 32d ("Come celebrate Mikey's six-bit roll-over!") I haven't really had any urge to even really acknowledge the day since. *shrug*

I spent my 30th birthday playing hokey covers with a sloppy band in Bongo Bob's basement. ::shrugs:: Could have been many worse ways to spend it.

Save the celebration for when ya want to celebrate.

You can celebrate being 30 when you're feeling better, when you have less going on.

It is something to celebrate. Welcome to my decade :)
