So I've spent most of today so far sitting on the floor of my childhood bedroom, surrounded by garbage bags, sorting through a metric fuckload of crap. Okay, well that's not entirely fair, as not all of it is really crap.

At Christmas, my dad started making serious noises about thinking about moving, which included something that could be paraphrased as "would you two finally get the rest of your shit out of my house?", and was directed at my sister and myself. The impact of this means one of three things has to happen to that shit- 1) get thrown out or given away, 2) get taken to my house for use and/or storage, or 3) move it to be stored in my mother's basement instead, since she's probably never moving again.

So I have decided to take a day and a half or so this weekend to begin to do just that.

Phase 1 is about half to two-thirds complete: Purge.

I've already filled several garbage bags, and have piles of things in the bedroom that generally fall into three categories- "keep", "give away", and "not sure". Frankly, I'm disturbed at the amount of things that have made it into the "keep" pile on the first round. This may be a very painful process. Most of them are clothes, clothes that are vaguely my size and that are wearable, are too nice to get rid of, but I'm not sure I'd wear. I don't wear all the clothes I currently have in my closet to begin with. Serious decisions will have to be made. I might need to enlist the help of several girlfriends on this one, eventually. There's also this really AMAZING plaid skirt, by Land's End, its marked size 12, but it probably at least a 10- that I'd love to go to a good home. I wore it ALL the time my junior and senior year of hs, and its still in great shape. I'm NOT throwing it out, I'm hesitant to give it away, but I'm not going to be able to wear it again for a loooong time. Its up for grabs.

The rest of the "keep" pile that isn't clothes I think I have a good idea how to handle. The coloring books and art set I'm sending/taking to Tuwani for the kids, and the office supplies will either come home with me, or I'll take them to the office. The sidewalk chalk I'm donating to CPT for future actions.

The hardest thing to decide what to do things with, though, are my doll things. I have two boxes of the minature stuff I had that I really don't want to give or throw away, and I have some doll clothes- Cabbage Patch Kid-type sizes- and accessories that I'm actually embarassingly sentimentally attached to. Those might have to be sealed in one of those big rubbermaid containers and stored in my mother's basement until I can figure out what to do about them. I know how tickled I was to find some of my mother's old toys, so maybe my kids or grandkids- or whoever- will be tickled to find mine in the next twenty or thirty years.

The rest? Books. And pictures. Pictures and books. And books. Again, those will probably have to get stored for awhile, because I've got at least two more enormous bookshelves worth of books that I don't have room for right now. And at some point I'd like to sort and label the photos, but not right now. But there are a ton. I must have spent all my babysitting and quartet money on getting photos developed in middle and high school. Dang.

And then there's already three big rubbermaid containers in the corner that are filled with god-knows-what that I haven't even begun to touch.

This is going to be an interesting process....

to be continued.....

off_coloratura has recently been doing similar things. She's recommended these websites to me:
http://organizedhome.com/content-2.html
http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/clutter/dealing.html

Very helpful. I am hoping I can get to doing some of this myself during the summer, if not sooner. Good luck!

If syphillis doesn't want that skirt, I'd love to have a look at it. Love Land's End plaid skirts.

I have about 5 or so plastic crates of sentimental things I can't bear to part with. One is mostly letters from my friends and photographs, one is silly kid stuff like charm necklaces and girl scout stuff (as well as three of my favorite shirts), one is journals, and one is art that I've made. Actually about two are art things I've made. The only thing I don't have with me is my barbie collection, I let my sister play with it too. Tom has an entire crate of old nintendos. Yes that is plural. Fortunatly the crate also includes game.

So, I think it's common for the pile not to be small.

My rule with clothes is if I haven't worn it in the past two years, and it's not extrememly sentimental, it's gotta go. The favorite high school skirt I would save in a crate. The too-nice stuff I never wear would be in the goodwill pile.

If that's any help. :-)
