I thought people who worked at computer stores were actually supposed to know something about computers.

Depends entirely on the store.

BestBuy? Forget about it. As near as I can tell, BB employees receive nothing more than basic retail training -- this is your stock, this is the cash register, this is what we'll do to you if you don't sell enough stuff, etc. Occasionally you'll get a real live geek who also happens to be a BB employee, but most of them are just retail drones.

The same is true for just about every chain I've patronised in recent years, with the possible exception of MicroCenter, which is focused more tightly on computers. CompUSA, tho', increasingly falls in the category with BestBuy.

Heh. The guy at MicroCenter was the worst. Totally clueless. I think he was even a manager.

Did you try the MicroCenter on Elston? Really really good help there, generally!

Yes, I did. I almost called YOU in a panic, but decided to give up and try again tomorrow (the issue is a toner cartridge that apparently nobody carries). The guy didn't even know what CDW was, when I asked him how I could find another place that might carry toner cartridges. It was very frustrating.

Are you kidding? If you actually KNOW about computers, you can make a hell of a lot more money maintaining them than selling them.

...Lemme guess, MicroCenter? :) (The clerk in the Mac department the other day actually sent us home with the wrong monitor, which I didn't notice until we got home and started to unpack it -- had to make a whole special trip back the next day for the right one)
