There is some greater karmic force out there that doesn't seem to want to let me bake cookies.  Something always seems to go wrong.

  1. Friday, I got everything together to make a batch of sugar cookie cut-outs, when I realized I was missing a)my cookie cutters, and b) flour.  Which is weird, because we always have tons of flour sitting around the house.  So I ran out to the store to get flour.
  2. When I got back from buying flour, I opened my can of shortening, which I only bought last year, to find it had gone rancid.  I didn't know shortening could go bad.
  3. Decided to make forgotten cookies instead.  Except I got to the end of the recipe only to realize that I didn't have any chocolate chips.  So I took a handful of my precious stash of Dove promises, and chopped them up.  This actually worked quite well, but it made a huge mess.
  4. Saturday, I got shortening.  Felicity was over, and we decided to bake, because she is the Queen of the Kitchen.  But the spritz dough didn't work out very well.  It got super stiff and stuff, and Felicity had to work her magic on it with milk and egg yolks so it would be pliable enough to go through the cookie press.  Which actually worked okay until the last little bit, when the press decided it had had enough for the day.  While I was adding to the dough, I noticed the mixer was having a hard time, and even smelled a little warm, so I turned it off and continued to beat by hand.
  5. So tonight, I turned the mixer on and it didn't work.  Argh!!!!!  I mixed dough by hand, and set it outside to chill, and I'll try to cut out the cookies and bake them tomorrow.  Then I tried to make some forgotten cookies, but I can't beat the egg whites and sugar fast enough by hand to get them to stiffen.  So I now have the worlds flattest batch of forgotten cookies in the oven, awaiting their fate.

If I go to the meetup tomorrow (which I'm still on the fence about, mostly due to money constraints) and if I ever get a decent batch of cookies out of my kitchen from hell, I'll bring cookies to the meetup to share.  But don't hold your breath.  Unless, of course, you're trying to turn some kind of festive color.

I would lend you my hand mixer (good enough for egg whites) at the meetup tonight, but I've no idea where it (and the beaters, and the cord) might be.

You can come to the meetup without spending money/bowling, you know.

Thanks for the thought :-) That is really nice of you.

I know, but I still have to put gas in the car to get there :-) But at this point it looks like we'll be there.

I'd lend you my mixer but I'm afraid of your karma. I should have done those egg whites when I was there. Darn.

bug me for my Grandmothers Kolacky recipe. They are just wonderful; once you have had them you can never enjoy anyone else's kolackys.

I just might have to do that... my grandfather used to make kolackys, but I don't think I know where the recipe is.

Like all my family recipes, it most likely came off the side of a box. But since it is my Grandmother, it probibly came off of a box in Poland.
