I really, really don't want to get trapped back into working retail. I'm really afraid that if I go back into retail full time just to make some quick money, I'll completely give up on what I really want to do, what I'm really good at. I know that people all around the world do that every day, and worse, so maybe I shouldn't complain. But I really don't want to go back into retail.

I hear ya. I worked downtown during Xmas one year, and after that I stuck to the university bookstore. It was much more sane.

One thing about Starbuck's: even part-time workers can get benefits. Would you consider switching to baristahood?

I know the feeling. Its why I'm still doing the same "temporary" job from 2.5 years ago. Pays well, but certainly not a career.

On another note, I really think a lot of people who hang out at Ben's would like Tom Waits.

Then again, I also think it would be fun to watch "Blue Velvet" at Ben's. There's a character in the movie who is just a...uh...blast.

Just curious - do you know what you want to do?

I want to get my music career back on track. I want to teach. I want to gig. I haven't had the "Chicago Symphony or Bust" attitude in years, but I want/need to play. Its an addiction, you know? I want to write, but I don't think I can make much of a living at that. I want to save the world, but I think that's pretty much pro bono work :)

at this point though... a job is a job... just set yourself the limits and bouandaries you need to tell yoruself that it is only a temporary solution. trust me ... something is better than nothing. and it does not mean that you cant take a job and keep looking for another one on the side, and leave when you find it.
