Hoping for a gold star!! *crosses fingers*
Aug. 6th, 2003 12:06 amOkay, so I've finally decided to respond to
sixfeetabove's Friends List Challenge! Except I changed it a little. I'm just mad about going for the spirit of something rather than the letter, so I'm not going to let anyone BRING ME DOWN! OH YEAH! Got a problem with that, lets take it out...
Oh. Sorry. Got carried away. Where was I?
Ahem.
Yes, yes, a letter to a part of my body. Well, since I can't really pick one part that needs particular admonishment or praise, I've decided to cover the whole damn lot in once. So here goes.
Dear Amy,
We here at the Complaint Department have been hearing an abundance of negative things lately. We've decided that we must address some of these issues sooner rather than later, as they seem to have gotten quite out of hand.
Due to this high volume of complaining about your life, we are prepared to offer up a few suggestions and possible short-to-medium term goals with which to work. The main grievances seem to include the following (in no particular order): Location; job; social life; and general life purpose. You will find attached some general outlines of how to go about changing some of these things.
Job: Okay, so you hated teaching at the music store, and were trying to make that change anyway. Then, they pulled something that merited a hastened exit. Congratulations. You made a success of the first part of that plan. However, you are now stuck with... how do you say.... oh yes- NO JOB. Where do we go from here? That's easy: ANOTHER JOB. Okay, in this job market, not that easy (see, you should have listened to
unhappymeal when you had the chance). However, you have a job offered to you that will probably make good on everything you need. But wait...... more complaints? You don't want to have to drive. Okay, I can see that. And you need something you can commute to if you move... uh huh, okay. Now, don't get ahead of yourself yet. You need to have a job, in order to have money, in order to move. We'll come back to this discussion in a moment.
Location: You're sick of living in Wheaton. Yes, it is convenient in some ways, living in the house, but not so much in so many other ways. True, it is slightly cheaper than living elsewhere, and yes, the landlord (AKA, Dad) won't kick you out if you're a week late with rent. But it is time to break free, and it is most definitely time for a change in scenery. Again, discussion will be revisited shortly.
Social life: Even though there have been a plethora of complaints in this area, it seems you are doing some good things on your own here these days. Yes, it is hard for a shy person to get out in the world, but you've made some good moves. You have a network of great friends, you just have to cultivate them. And by going to last month's LJ meetup (Blatant plug!!!:
chicagomeetup!!!) was certainly a step in the right direction. Now, all you need is some money in order to entertain yourself with said new friends. Which brings is back full circle to...
THINGS TO ACCOMPLISH BY NEW YEAR'S:
1)Get temporary job that will pay enough to sock money away in the bank.
2)Move. Preferably to city or very close. Not being picky about accomodations will be a huge asset in apartment hunting.
2a)Get job that requires only public transportation. Ditch car entirely.
3)Grow some balls! Meet people! Have fun!
Doesn't sound too difficult now, does it?
Great. Now get moving.
You may have noticed that we have failed to cover the "General Life Purpose" part. While this is the area where most people feel they need the most guidance, it is also the area where one can receive the least. It is the part that will be revealed to you, rather than handed to you. In other words, figure it out for yourself. Quit the wishy-washy, namby-pamby bit, and look around. Its there. It really is. End of discussion.
So there you have it. This has taken months of research, and additional months of compiling information, but we hope it will be of some help in the near future. While we will never tell you to stop complaining, we will continue to feel free to respond with a hearty "so what??" if you feel the need to complain without action. You will be hearing from us periodically until you accomplish the guidelines set out for you. Best of luck!
Love always,
Amy
