Possibly interesting fact: The clarinetist who played in the little chamber ensemble for the inauguration is somebody I played in youth symphony with, way back when.

Having said that, I also need to say that I hate John Williams, and I thought that the piece sucked.

But since I am trying to concentrate on the good things about the day, I will say GO ANTHONY!

I didn't care much for the piece either. I'm still of the opinion that Copeland pretty much did the definitive arrangement(s) of "Simple Gifts" though.

I think John Williams does a great job writing for movies, for the most part- I think his Harry Potter music is some of the best he's ever written, although I think the Star Wars stuff is incredibly repetitive (even though it fits the movies very well). But most classical musicians tend to think he's a wimp when it comes to writing anything except movie music. Usually he doesn't try, so I was surprised they chose him- I think they should have chosen John Adams to write something. I LOVE John Adams.

Oh, and I agree with you, they get lots of credit for playing outside- although it was pre-recorded, which I think was brilliant. The level of performance itself was extraordinary, I just didn't like the piece of music :-)
