Tonight, such a huge part of me was fulfilled in a way that it hasn't been in so long.

Wow, that opening sounds like the first chapter of some erotic novel. I mean, there was a total soap opera involved and all- three guys, two girls, a love triangle, a love rectangle, a love dodecahedron.... but I get ahead of myself.

First off, many thanks to Daniel for getting me the ticket. But also ENORMOUS thanks to [livejournal.com profile] divalibby76 for taking my OH-SO-SUBTLE hints and doing the original begging on my behalf.

Tonight I went to the opera. And not just any opera. The Lyric Opera. Of Chicago. So there. Nyah.

I kept saying that its the first time I've been to The Opera- I'm more of a symphony gal, myself- but that's not entirely accurate. I saw Madame Butterfly by a local company when I was little. I was in two operas at Grant Park while in Children's Chorus, and I did play an opera pit once. I hated playing the opera pit. But that's a different story. But it was the first time I've ever been to a real, professional, full-staged opera. And it was the first time I'd been to the Civic Opera House in Chicago. I'm amazed that Chicago has not one, but three absolutely gorgeous, historic performance halls- Civic Opera, Orchestra Hall (I absolutely, categorically refuse to call it Symphony Center. So commercialized!) and Auditorium Theater. What culture!

But I digress. We saw Partenope (Par-TEN-oh-pee), by Handel. It was three and a half hours of Baroque- Libs, I can see why you were hesitant to sit through three and a half hours of Baroque- but it was AMAZING! What a wonderful production! Its so much easier to listen to opera when you know what the story is. The acting, the costumes, the set, it was great! I'm always a sucker for a good story line, too. Although I still think Partenope and Arsace deserved each other. Why would Rosmina want a guy like that BACK? Sheeeeesh. It was so much fun to watch Dan's face during the last act. He watches opera like some people watch wrestling. It was so cute how into it he was! On the edge of his seat and all. I have a lot of respect for people who hold that much passion for something.

Afterward Libby, Dan and I went for drinks with Dan's friends visiting from Germany. Benjamin and Brian are two such cool people. It was a little surreal to be back in Stolaf-land, but it was such a relief to be among musicians again. They laughed when I told viola jokes, and I laughed when they told singer and trumpet player jokes. Its all good. In fact, its all so good I could cry. But I won't. But I sure felt more at home tonight than I have anywhere for a very very long time. I hope I get to see Dan, Benjamin and Brian again! (I'm pretty dang sure I'll be seeing Libby again someday.... maybe soon...) And maybe, just maybe someday, if I'm good, I'll get to go to the opera again for free.

I think the crick in my neck is going away.

"Doctor, it hurts when I do this."

"Well, then don't do that."

But now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get to bed. I have an entire night full of dreaming of Amish computer-raisings ahead of me.
