I know nothing of Shostakovich. What would you compare it to? I'll probably do a google search later tonight if I don't fall asleep.

20th century... Russian... oppressed by the Soviet regime.... that's the basics.

He's heavy, with really thick orchestration. I personally find him comparable to Mahler, in terms of the thickness, but a slightly more dischordant sound that comes with mid-20th century composers.

Best I can do on the whole 25-words-or-less bit :-)

Wow, that does look cool. It looks like it is almost over though.

The series well through, but the concert on Sunday was what caught my eye specifically.

when i hear oppressed, heavy, thick, dischordant, I think of sitting through an opera by Wagner :) It's at least worth me finding something to listen to and giving it a go that way. And while I expect more than a 25 words or less entry from a music geek (lol), I will have you know that your posts inspired me to put on 98.7, which I have been studying to for the past three or so hours. I really miss classical music...

Awesome!

Heh. I was just lazy, that's why I stuck with the limit.

Shostakovitch is more dischordant that Wagner, but easier to take. In my opinion, anyway. And he's Russian, so don't forget all that angst. Woohoo for Russian angst!
