HAMSA – From the Middle East to the Midwest

A Genesis at the Crossroads’ Production

August 27-28, 2005

Lincoln Park (just south of the Farm in the Zoo to Stockton & LaSalle Streets)


We will transform a Chicago city park into a Middle Eastern bazaar showcasing the instrumental and vocal music, dance, visual and culinary art and literature from the Middle East and North Africa. This will be an open festival for the City of Chicago, engaging people of all ages to experience a taste of the region through its art and food. Local vendors will sell Middle Eastern and North African wares and local Middle Eastern and North African restaurants will have food booths from which people can purchase samples of regional food.

A Children’s Tent will provide visual arts, drumming and dance workshops along with performance art geared for a younger audience. Camel rides will be available.

Entryway donation requested $5-10 (for everyone over 5 years of age)

Saturday: Noon – 9 PM

Sunday: Noon – 7 PM

Main Stage Performers:

Pharoah’s Daughter, Sharq Arabic Music Ensemble(Boston), The Hamsa Arab-Jewish Fusion Project, Omar Farouk, Alberto Mizrahi and Howard Levy, Shahin (Shahin & Sepehr) and our world-class headliners, Israeli Musician Yair Dalal who performed at the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony and Palestinian Musician Naser Musa with his own unique set of impressive accolades. They will collaborate to compose and perform an original piece of music commissioned specifically for the Genesis festival finale, in which they will be featured alongside the Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble.
