Jan. 8th, 2004 08:25 pmI picked out seventeen songs for the retreat weekend and learned to play them.
While this might sound like a fairly impressive repertoire list for a beginner, keep in mind that it is possible to play all seventeen of those songs with nine total chords.
I typed up lyric sheets, printed them- coalated even!- and stapled them.
I have the chords written in on all the songs, because in most cases I had to change the key from where they were originally written. There is one song that I have to write the melody out by ear, and then figure out the chords for. Shouldn't take too long. Yay for four semesters of music theory!
I am making a binder with all the songs so my music doesn't fall apart, and I don't have to memorize the chord progressions for all of them right away. Although a true musician with a good ear should be able to eventually know what comes next. But that will come in time.
Now, if someone will just come over and help me figure out how to make the daggummed three-hole punch work, I'll be in business......

Jan. 8th, 2004 09:08 pmWhen I was growing up, we had this book of music in the house called The Genesis Songbook. It had a lot of what I classify as "hippie Christian" stuff in it- you know, like praise music, when praise music was still good (don't get me started on praise music, please, just don't....)- like, They'll Know We Are Christians By Our Love, and Let There Be Peace on Earth. It also contained quite a few folk music/folk rock songs of the day (it was published in the late 60's, I think), like Peter, Paul and Mary, and Simon and Garfunkle (I <3 Art!), and a bunch of war protest and civil rights stuff. I'm pretty sure its out of print now. I guess it was followed up some years later by a sequel, The Exodus Songbook, but I don't think it was as good as the first one. A few years ago, I know there were both of them lying around in the music room at church, but I've looked several times with people who knew their way around the music library (read: filing cabinet), but we couldn't find them.
I tried doing a google search, but all I come up with is Genesis the band stuff.
I'd give about anything to lay my hands on a copy of the first book, if not both of them.
