I'm sure most of you have probably picked that up by now.
There was a time that i was really good. I mean, REALLY good. And there were times that i really REALLY loved it. And there were even times that those two overlapped. A great many times. I could even say it was almost even most of the time.
When i was in high school, if you asked me what i wanted to be when i grew up, I probably would have just looked at you funny- after all, it was a given. I mean, i had a viola in my hands, right?
Tonight i did the Great Youth Symphony Dash. I had one student playing in DuPage Youth Symphony at 6:00 and another playing in West Suburban Youth at 7:00, a half an hour away from the first location. But i did it. Thankfully, the first half of the first concert only lasted 25 minutes, so we simply hauled ass to the other one and made it just in time.
I played in the DuPage Youth Symphony for almost eight years. So sitting there in the familiar auditorium, watching a familiar-if-graying conductor was a little odd. Surreal, perhaps, although not nearly the most surreal moment i've had in my life in recent months.
It brought back really good memories. Of when i was really good, and when i really truly simply loved playing for the sake of playing.
It felt really good.
