Five things I love about working with kids (in no particular order):

)When the light bulb goes off. Invariably, the look on their faces is priceless. Its kinda like "Oh, so THAT'S what that means. I never knew!"

)Their quirky little personalities. Each kid is a sociology study in his or her own personal way. It used to be rough changing my approach and attitude for every lesson to adapt to each kid's learning style or personality, but its actually kind of fun, now. One child is shy and sort of fragile, but another is just a miniature Xena, standing there with wild hair, chewing on her sponge. One is so serious he looks middle aged already at 8. Even the few that really have no musical talent are such funky little people I adore them to death. This one leads right into the next one....

)It gives me material for my novel. Each character that comes through the door, each story they tell, each interchange I have with them or witness them have with a sibling or parent gives me fodder for my book. In twenty years.

)They think I'm cool!

)They're fun. I don't have to be sophisticated and serious to do this job. In fact, the more sophisticated I am the less I can communicate with them. Which means I can be eight years old if I wanna.
