Sep. 18th, 2002 12:49 amSo I haven't posted anything here since Thursday. Mostly because I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to say, much less HOW I wanted to say it. This summer has been very interesting for me. Not really changes, just a cementing of what I already knew was there. My first instinct was to apologize to everyone for having gotten so political. But then I realized that it was MY journal ;) and I didn't have anything to apologize for. But I find myself getting sucked into the idea of politics- to use a word loosely- more and more lately. The last year has been cataclysmic. What's on my mind lately is definitely of the serious and non-lighthearted variety. I know that I subscribe to very controversial beliefs- and that's for people who even care about politics. I didn't until recently. But I have to stick to them, and everything I learn makes me more and more determined to speak up about them. Last week was incredibly political for me. I think the most powerful was Friday night. My church co-hosted, along with the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center, September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows and the American Friends Service Committe (the Quakers) something called the No More Victims Tour. Among the speakers was a young gentleman- and an artist with a unique and gifted vision- who grew up in Iraq and had survived the 1991 Gulf War. He brought us a compelling video.

Can you tell me you're not affected?
At the end of the video, Madeline Albright (Secretary of State under Clinton) is being interviewd on some news magazine show. The interviewer tells her that over 500,000 Iraqi children have died due to U.S. sanctions since the Gulf War. She asks if Ms. Albright thinks this is "worth it". Ms. Albright responds that yes, she thinks this is WORTH IT. You could hear the gasps of everyone in the room. Interestingly enough, when I went to track this down online, I found a website that is supposed to have a clip of the interview and found theCONTENT BLOCKED.
Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.
I don't get it. Any of it.
