Oct. 6th, 2003 12:00 amAn interesting weekend.... a most interesting weekend....
Of course, it didn't turn out as planned. But it never turns out as planned. So really, nothing too out of the ordinary.
Yesterday I made plans with
divalibby76 to meet her downtown to try to hear some of the stuff at the Day of Music at Orchestra Hall (sorry, can not bring myself to call it Symphony Center- I'm a purist). It was ten hours of music on five different stages, all sorts of varieties and all for FREE. The first concert began at two o'clock, and it completely escaped my remembrance that if you wanted to get into the first concert, you had to be lining up at least an hour in advance. So we managed to not get into an all Strauss (Richard, that is) concert, which contained one of my absolute favorite pieces, Till Eulenspeigel's Merry Pranks. Ah well.
Interesting event #1: Whilst wandering around the lobby waiting for Libby, I thought I spied
rangoon from across the room. However, it was extremely crowded, and I didn't have the chance to get over to say hello. I recognized him from the last meetup, but that evening I was trapped in one corner or the other and hadn't had the opportunity to introduce myself.
Interesting event #2: Libby and I decided to wander around the Symphony Store for a bit, to kinda kill time and decide what to do next. The first person I see as we walk in is someone I used to work with years ago when I was still working down there. It turns out he just moved back to Chicago after getting his PhD in psychology, and is working there weekends for extra cash (he is employed by DCFS, and of course, working for the government isn't going to pay all the bills, so...) Even though we hadn't seen each other in almost four years, he remembered me immediately. I hadn't known him that well back then, but we got on well the few times we worked together. So I commandeered his phone number and email, and I will email him. I'm also considering going back to work there three or four days a week, which would not only get me the much-needed extra cash, but would once again score me two free tickets to any concert at Orchestra Hall that is not sold out. Hot dog!
Interesting event #3: After missing our second opportunity to hear free music, Libby and I headed down to the Raindog Books and Cafe for a hot cuppa. It used to be my absolute favorite used bookstore, Booksellers Row, and I had sort of been boycotting it since Booksellers Row closed a couple years ago. Lucky I didn't boycott it this time, because as we were finishing our chai and chocolate, both hot, I looked up at the balcony, and lo and behold, there again sat
rangoon and his buddy. This time I decided to be bold, and we went upstairs to introduce ourselves to them. I figured the first time I didn't say hi was forgivable, but the second time in one day would simply be rude. So we did. And now we're friends. Woohoo! Hi Sam! Oh yeah, and they tipped us off about the Polkaholics
Okay, quick sum up of the interim: Met up with
_narcissis_- went to Chinatown-bought things-took ginseng-ate-went back to Orchestra Hall-waited for more music- Sunday went home- due to circumstances far out of my reach, I did not make it back to the suburbs to have dinner with
wildrose80 and
bethypooh95- got intoxicated at Bennigans- Saw the Polkaholics- they rocked BIG TIME!
It was really funny, seeing that group. There were so many people there who were expecting a real Polka band, and there were a couple of mass exodus' out of the room of people with the most bizarre looks on their faces. They are a rock 'n roll polka band, and not a really particularly good one, but they're HILARIOUS, and they give a great show. The Beer Barrel Polka must have gone on for ten minutes. To my knowledge, there's only one verse to the Beer Barrel Polka.... We're going to see them again. Oh yes, we are.
Interesting event #4: On the el on the way home, I sat near these two ladies. One had a button on that was from Illinois Gender Advocacy. It simply says HATE with a line through it, which I think is a pretty simple message. Plus, it seems like a group I should be supporting. So I finally got up the nerve to ask where I could get one. She goes "Oh, you're in luck, I just happen to have a bag full of them!" I got two, one of which is going on my o-PIN-ionated backback, and I was going to offer the other one up, first-come, first-serve, but my darling sister,
pheret1 snapped it up right away. Sorry.
Today, we celebrated my mom's birthday and watched the Cubs win! CUBS WIN CUBS WIN CUBS WIN CUBS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And even though nothing went as planned, it kinda turned out to be a really really cool weekend. Libby pointed out that its really out of character for me to approach people and get email addresses and introduce myself. And she's right. And I did it before I took a hit of ginseng! Weird. But I liked it, so maybe I could do it again someday? Dunno.....
