It has been a strange day. Actually, today has been two strange days. In fact, I think somewhere mid-afternoon I skipped over a couple parallel universes and landed in someone else's life.

First half of day:

I went in to start a new part-time job at Pier 1 Imports. A pretty cool place to work, and... can we say "employee discount" (I try to make a practice of working retail places I'd shop)? My goal was to work Mondays and Fridays and some Saturdays, leaving Tue-Thurs open for teaching, and Sunday... well... open. So I went in today, only to find I was on the schedule for the next two weeks in a way.... well... that totally wasn't what we had agreed upon. I'm not sure if this can be worked out. I am going in again on Thursday. In the meantime, as I'm downtown tomorrow and between lunch with [livejournal.com profile] divalibby76 and coffee/dinner with [livejournal.com profile] love_alone, I will consider putting more applications in along the way on Michigan Avenue.

Mood- Super Frustrated

Second half of day:

This was a total red-letter day for teaching. One viola student was pleased to tell me that she had made concert orchestra for youth symphony, instead of preparatory. Yay! She spent two weeks at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp this summer and came back playing up a storm. She works pretty hard, even though she complains sometimes- although I'm pretty convinced she complains for the sake of complaining most of the time. I did have another student who was exceptionally crabby and whiney today, but I think I made a few things clear to her. She has the tendency to argue with me when I try to correct her, and it gets really aggravating- she's an only child, and pretty spoiled, I think. Even though she seemed ticked that I spoke sternly to her, I noticed a change in her attitude for the rest of the lesson. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, some of them can be taught! The best part is, I'm gaining back my former student that I wrote about yesterday. I went out to her house tonight to coach her on orchestra music, and she and her mom and I talked for about an hour. They will be seeing the other teacher at least till the end of the month, but will start seeing me again as well to concentrate on orchestra stuff and theory, with a good possibility they'll ditch the other teacher in October. YAY!!!!

Mood- exhilarated, accomplished, professional

And now, and update for all those who have been giving me suggestions about teaching- for your convenience (since this has gotten quite long enough as it is), it is

I really appreciate all the support you have been giving me about teaching independently. It means a lot to me. While the majority of my studio came from that music store, I've been teaching out of a local high school as well for about a year and a half now. I've retained a consistent studio there of between four and nine students, and now its growing, thankfully. The best parts are that its FREE (no studio rent, yay!), and that I'm not affiliated with anyone so I can maintain my own lesson policy/scheduling. I do love teaching, and intend to do it for the rest of my life. My former-and-returning student will be meeting me at the high school, and I hope they'll be able to talk more of the music store kids into following me there. There are certain ethics involved in taking those students with me, so I can't recruit, but if they call me, as this one did, I'll welcome them with open arms. So, I am indeed pursuing teaching independently. Its great fun. You should try it sometime.

Oh yeah..... I stopped to get gas on the way home from that student's house at a Citgo station that I haven't used since it changed hands (it used to be some scummy, gross, ghetto generic gas place). I went in to pay, and the clerk kind of looked at me funny, and seemed like he wanted to say something but didn't. As I was leaving it occured to me I recognized him. Turns out, his family also owns the Citgo/7-11 I used to get gas at all the time when I worked at the music store, and he recognized me! I'm not used to being recognized by people. It kind of made me feel good that he remembered me. Don't know why. Hey, I'm recognizable!

Yay! I'm glad you have good teaching news. Were your students on vacation for the summer? (You haven't been mentioning it much before this.)

*smiles* I had a good teaching day today too.

A lot of those remaining students took turns taking lots of vacations.... plus I guess I just had other things on my mind as I posted :) It was a rare week I taught more than three. The only downside to teaching privately: Summer!

Yep. Summers = weird schedules. After the summer, I'm still readjusting my head to the possibility of teaching more than two days...

Days like this totally make up for the days I feel like stringing them all up in a row upside-down. Would you agree?

I'll welcome more students.... I'm extremely poor!

(hmm...maybe the food is better there!)
